An outstanding feature of the program is the annual lecture series that brings renowned practitioners to speak directly with students. The series features creative directors; graphic, interaction and industrial designers; biohackers and programmers; writers, curators, and media theorists — all reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the design field today and into the future. With over 3.8 million objects from around the world spanning 2 million years, the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology produces engaging and timely exhibitions, cultural programs, and training opportunities for campus and community members of all ages. The Berkeley Institute of Design (BiD) is a research group that fosters a deeply interdisciplinary approach to design for the 21st century, spanning human-computer interaction, mechanical design, education, architecture and art practice.
Design MDes
Every MFA in Design student receives a partial scholarship from Mason Gross School of the Arts, for each year of study. Room One Thousand is dedicated to interdisciplinary research and discourse around the topic of architecture. Right Angles is a student club and a magazine that highlights the often overlooked creative community and culture at UC Berkeley. We work with two communities in Peru to identify and implement technologies that reduce the level of arsenic in ground water to acceptable levels, or identify alternative drinking water sources. The 34-acre UC Botanical Garden is one of the most diverse landscapes in the world with over 10,000 types of plants, including many rare and endangered species.

Pioneers in Engineering is a STEM outreach group that seeks to create engaging STEM experiences for East Bay students by providing mentorship to them as well as an exciting robotics competition every spring. We design and build low-cost medical devices, resources, and technologies for underdeveloped or developing nations. DEC aims to create a collaborative maker community by connecting people with diverse skills, equipping them with resources, and educating them through workshops. The DeCal Program (or just DeCal) is an aggregate of student-run courses at the University of California, Berkeley – here, students create and facilitate their own classes on a variety of subjects, many of which are not addressed in the traditional curriculum. BUSSA is the undergraduate student association for urban studies majors, city planning minors, and all other students at UC Berkeley interested in city planning.
Our MDes equips you with important design skills and knowledge that enable you to realize a lifelong career in design.
If you do not come from a design background, you may have other evidence that shows you are a good candidate for graduate study. For example, perhaps you have done drawing, photography, painting, or other arts in the past and you could include some of that work. Maybe you are a published author and you can include some examples of articles that you have written. Or perhaps you come from a technical background and you can upload technical briefs or diagrams from your past work. The cost of attendance is an estimation of the amount of money it could potentially cost you to go to MassArt for one academic year.
DMA graduate students come from many fields and artists from diverse backgrounds including the visual arts, sciences, and engineering are encouraged to apply. In line with the school’s belief that affordable graduate study in art should be available to all students, all accepted graduate students receive fellowships equivalent to the cost of tuition for the two years of the program. Incoming graduate students are awarded fellowships equivalent to full out-of-state tuition in their first year and full in-state tuition in their second year. (International students continue to receive out-of-state tuition in their second year). No additional applications or requirements are necessary to qualify for the fellowships.
An arts education in a small school, within a major university that has every activity and resource you might want, at the center of one of the world’s most exciting creative capitals—that’s Roski. Arts District next door and all of SoCal’s adventures within reach, you’ll have every opportunity to immerse yourself in the arts and enjoy the environs. Small classes, studio immersion and a collaborative culture—at USC Roski you will join a close-knit community of internationally renowned faculty and talented students who share ideas and raise provocative questions. You’ll also connect with a remarkable network of alumni working in Los Angeles and across the country. U.S. News & World Report has cited dispute resolution as one of the fastest-growing academic disciplines of the new millennium. Organizations are increasingly aware of the value of conflict management skills to enhance productivity, financial success, and personal satisfaction.

Our students become creative thinkers and skilled makers in an inter-disciplinary educational environment, which provides the critical knowledge and expertise to re-imagine new contexts that challenge traditional structures and assumptions guiding art and design practice. Virtual Reality at Berkeley is a student group dedicated to bringing virtual reality to the campus community. This club provides students with access to virtual reality equipment and training and charters project teams to explore the applications and implications of virtual reality in diverse fields through research and development. By providing access to hardware and expertise, they aim to lower the barriers to experiencing and developing virtual reality technology. They are partnering with established labs on campus to investigate virtual and augmented reality as tools for robotics control systems, visualization of complex data, and as an interface for the future. Virtual Reality at Berkeley engages with the campus community through public demo days and infosessions.
Iterating with intention, MADE participants create and refine work according to real-world needs. Each student is also offered optional part-time employment in Co-Adjutant positions that support the operation of the undergraduate and graduate design area. Robotics at Berkeley is an undergraduate robotics club that supports student-led projects, organizes robotics-related events, and serves as an informational hub for robotics opportunities on campus. Global Architecture Brigades is a student-led, volunteer, design/build organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life in underserved nations through the design and construction of socially responsible and sustainable architecture solutions. Global Architecture Brigade's current emphasis is to help villages of Latin America. Beyond the brigade, the activist culture bred in the organization will function as a connective strand between the Bay Area architectural academic and professional community, and inspire local engagement in volunteer design/build initiatives.

So it was with great fanfare that the city revealed in December that it had approved an “exclusive negotiating agreement” with the Las Vegas Museum of Art to continue work on plans for a proposed 90,000-square-foot, three-story building in Symphony Park. Rather than enlarging its physical footprint, LACMA aims to broaden its cultural reach, influence and presence in the West, and globally — a benign Manifest Destiny for the California visual arts scene. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies before completing your registration. Individuals with disabilities who experience any technology-based barriers accessing the University’s websites or services can visit the Office of Workplace Equity and Inclusion. These paid positions are not guaranteed, as they depend on enrollment, scheduling, and expertise.
The school’s professional internship program has relationships with L.A.’s top museums, galleries and creative studios. You’ll have chances to exhibit your work in our celebrated galleries and compete for special prizes and grants. And international opportunities include art- and design-related study abroad programs.
MADE students also benefit from the complementary strengths of RISD and Brown, neighboring world-class institutions on Providence’s East Side. Close academic ties make it easy for you to broaden your knowledge through elective coursework or access to campus resources. The crossroads between art, technology and society is an exciting new field for Art + Design practitioners. Through the combination of precision engineering, electronic control, sensory inputs, information design, and intelligent systems and haptic and sensory feedback the MAD program explores a variety of possibilities in these fields. The future of design experiences is about integration of the physical and digital—as hybridization or new invention.
You’ll learn timeless principles while gaining exposure to approaches, ideas, and methods at the forefront of design. Throughout it all, you’ll learn from and work with some of the brightest thinkers and most talented practitioners in the field. We encourage graduate students to apply design thinking and innovative technologies in new directions through research, experimentation, creative production, and entrepreneurship. Graduate students are also expected to create, present and interpret their work with the intellectual expertise and refined skills required to become leaders in their professional field. The Rutgers MFA in design immerses students in critical inquiry and experimental making, to design for a changing world.
Combining studio work with speculative thinking, the program focuses on interdisciplinary research to inform the creation of publications, interfaces, information, and experiences.
