If you do not come from a design background, you may have other evidence that shows you are a good candidate for graduate study. For example, perhaps you have done drawing, photography, painting, or other arts in the past and you could include some of that work. Maybe you are a published author and you can include some examples of articles that you have written. Or perhaps you come from a technical background and you can upload technical briefs or diagrams from your past work. The cost of attendance is an estimation of the amount of money it could potentially cost you to go to MassArt for one academic year.

DMA graduate students come from many fields and artists from diverse backgrounds including the visual arts, sciences, and engineering are encouraged to apply. In line with the school’s belief that affordable graduate study in art should be available to all students, all accepted graduate students receive fellowships equivalent to the cost of tuition for the two years of the program. The cornerback wore a custom pale salmon and silver floral-embroidered suit made by menswear designer Tom Marchitelli. The NFL Draft commenced Thursday night in Detroit with 13 prospective players hitting the red carpet, proving that they’re a force to be reckoned with both for their athletic prowess and their style. Co-founder of Humble Design, Treger Strasberg, shares her story on why she was so compelled to help people in need and how her nonprofit is making a positive impact on the homeless community, one house at a time.

We also hire security guards during the “Deco Day” to ensure our volunteers and staff are safe. Similar to Humble Design, the Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan also works with a caseworker to connect those in need with gently used furnishings for their living spaces. However, the Furniture Bank operates slightly differently than Humble Design; The Furniture Bank does not offer interior design services and only provides basic furnishings and housewares. The clients pay around 10 to 15 cents on the dollar of the resale value of the furniture to help keep operations going. Families take a personal stake in their newly furnished homes, leading to a remarkable success rate – 99 percent to receive Humble Design's services have escaped the cycle of homelessness.

Both nonprofits expressed that there is a great need for these kinds of services. The Furniture Bank of Southeastern Michigan is a stone’s throw away from Humble Design in Pontiac, said Robert Boyle, the furniture bank’s executive director. After renting the house, she purchased the home on her birthday a few years ago. “It gave the kids comfort and me comfort, and I was able to focus on other things. I guess that’s how we were able to stay so long, because they were able to relax more, and I got a better job,” Ashley stated. It all began in 2009 when Treger Strasberg, the CEO and founder of Humble Design, was new to the Detroit area.

In the summer before my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to go to Israel, and as it turned out, I stayed for my entire senior year. In Israel, I felt connected in a way I had never been before. I graduated and went to New York City to study painting and drawing at the School of Visual Arts. One day, I met an artist on the street selling these amazing paintings for just $200. And it dawned on me, even if I could replicate the quality of his work, I’d never make it as a painter.

” I cringe at all the assumptions people make about poverty in this country. A vast population in America is just one paycheck or one emergency away from calamity. We have partnered with DTE to build out an expansion manual and standardize a very well oiled system.

We assist the transformation of lives in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, San Diego, and Seattle. MIKE HAN is one of the most exciting artists working here in Detroit, with growing recognition across the country. Drawing deeply on his Korean heritage, his artwork is inspired by Korean calligraphy, graffiti, and modern design. He has been commissioned for murals by Google, LinkedIn, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, and more. His paintings are in the permanent collections of Mercedes Benz Financial Services, Huntington Bank, Shinola Hotel, Daxton Hotel, as well as many private collections. Mike’s artistic practice is focused on the truth that we are all connected.

Humble Design accepts gently used mattress donations and monetary donations for beds. Through its Beds for Kids program, the Furniture Bank was able to raise $30,000 last year with help from local foundations. Twin beds for children are a highly desired item for which both nonprofits expressed a need. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, corporate sponsorships, furniture donations or making a financial gift, please visit humbledesign.org. With your ticket, you will get three hours of play, food and non-alcoholic beverages (cash bar will also be open).

Where do you like to shop or local designers you support? ModMart for furniture, SHE stores, Intermix and Caruso Caruso for me and John Varvatos for Rob. Do you have advice for those who want to start their own nonprofit?

We have been featured on ABC, NBC, CNN, The New York Times, Fast Company, Upworthy, Ford Go Further, The Meredith Vieira Show, Mitch Albom’s Heart of Detroit, Motor City Rising, the Radiant Project and many others. Businesses and families, as well as the local furniture company Gorman’s, all donate furniture to Humble Design. Strasberg said Humble Design is always low on beds, so the organization itself occasionally buys those in bulk. Otherwise, generous community members donate all other furniture items.

Ready-to-Assemble DIY Wood Pergola Kits & Accessories

design pergola

Design a backyard with separate zones, like a dining area, lounging space and small gardens. "Pergolas create a distinct outdoor room and at the same time, their open structure allows for connection to the rest of the yard," says Poppy. A gorgeous wood pergola which was well-designed and has gorgeous minute details that makes its elegant appeal. It has one side fixed on the exterior walls, and the other fixed on wooden posts. What makes it more special is that the edges of the wood have been chamfered, removing the ‘sharp’ look of typical edges.

Grey Composite Decking

Another European-inspired design which was used as a walkway covering. The wooden trellis were painted in white to match the white finish of the ionic columns which were fixed on a raised concrete and brick base to make it more sturdy. This small pool-side wooden pergola uses weather-treated timber in big & thick blocks, giving it a massive & bulky look. One side has a latticed decorative accent where vines could grow and crawl on, eventually providing shade for the sitting area placed in the structure. The design for this example was made to match the clean, sleek & modern look of this pool area. This was fixed on the raised portion of the ground which surrounds a sitting area with two long benches in the same white-painted wood material.

Keep It Natural With Raw Wood

They were left bare at the sides to allow a breeze to pass through the structure. However, nowadays they can be freestanding and include beams laid across one or more sides so plants can be grown to create shelter from wind if necessary. The basic structure remains, however, which is a square or rectangular frame made using posts and beams that support plants. Pergolas are an excellent way to ease the transition from house to other hardscape amenities. Here, the outdoor kitchen and pool received a shading structure that ties in with the home's architecture. Space the pergola's roof boards as needed to shield people against the sun; this one relies on close spacing to offer more shade.

Angle the Roof

A covered pergola helps solve that problem, and can even let you better enjoy the comforts of an indoor living room or dining area on your backyard patio. But you’re going to have to decide what kind of alfresco style your seating area is going to have—and that’s where scrolling through pergola designs comes into play. Each pergola kits’ style provides a different amount of coverage for your outdoor space.

All in all, this is one of the most cost-effective ways to make your pergola more functional and stylish at the same time. Most pergolas are made to provide partial lighting or even indirect light, but you can also make use of a full roof that blocks light entirely. Complete shade is often most effective when combined with existing structures, or with the right furniture and vantage point. If you’re considering pergola shade options, artfully draped fabric happens to be another great method for shielding from the glances of neighbors or traffic. It's also useful for adding protection to decks and other elements from color fading from the elements, but be sure to pick a fabric intended for the outdoors.

You can easily choose from the wide design selection & assemble the kit as it comes with complete materials. Since these are pre-fabricated, however, they can be quite expensive and you will also be limited to the sizes and designs they have available. People are often confused about the difference between pergolas and gazebos and often interchange the two different terms. Gazebos are typically round or octagonal and have a complete roof structure, while pergolas are typically square or rectangular in shape and have no permanent roof covering. There are so many pergola ideas to choose from that it can feel difficult to make a decision – but the most important things to focus on are sun protection, and relaxing or socializing outside.

We do not offer installation services on our standard style pergolas, but we do have a directory with companies listed that offer pergola installation services. These companies are not endorsed by us in any way, but are companies who chose to list themselves on our website to offer installation services. You will also receive a complete set of installation instructions with your pergola kit. Our timber frame pergola kits do include installation, and pricing will be provided.

Big Kahuna™ Solar Pergola Kit

That's a small part of the reason they also pair exceptionally well with decks, which tend to already host several amenities. Broken down into its parts, a pergola is little more than a few posts, beams, and rafters. It can be dependent or independent of other structures and can serve either a highly functional or entirely aesthetic purpose. By providing a source of shelter from the elements, pergolas can help to create a more livable space outdoors.

Pergola Roof Structures

Forego the traditional design and use a series of arches, with a seating area in the middle. Imagine the fragrance surrounding you as you dine on summer evenings – a spectacular focal point for the garden. This statement yellow pergola draws other yellows out of the garden, making a garden-wide design spectacle. Choose a colour you like, use it to paint some or all of your pergola, and then grow flowering plants around it to settle it into the garden. Pergolas can be made of wood, stone, concrete, metal or several materials combined.

The plans include photographs, drawings, clear directions, a materials list, and a tools list to help you through each step of the building process. They’re often attached to the wall of a home, and they don’t include walls—they’re basically small, extendable roofs. They’re typically octagonal, often screened and with their own decks—though none of those elements are actually requirements for a gazebo. You can save and create new orders through your account, choose the payment method, enter multiple shipping addresses, and track your orders.

Any combination of materials and styles can work in this situation, just make sure the posts are securely fitted and can safely support the weight of the beams, with and without plants. A pergola without plants is an option if you'd rather keep it low maintenance. To create shade, you can simply attach a sun awning to the underside of the roof frame. A carport is a protective parking space for cars, similar to a pergola but usually with a rain-proof roof.

The terms arbor and pergola are often used interchangeably, but an arbor is more of a structure used to support vines or to direct foot traffic within a garden. Use wooden beams to create a simple structure under which you can add a seating area for al fresco dining. This particular design has walls on three sides to provide additional shelter from wind, and has potted plants inside and a hanging basket hanging from a beam.

Plus, the color can be a great canvas for adding a colorful canopy, hanging plants, lighted paper lanterns, or some outdoor curtains. If you enjoy entertaining outdoors, the integrated bar and shelf are sure to come in handy. They’re a great place to put beverages and snacks, but you can also use them to decorate the pergola with plants and other decor. If you’re looking for additional accessories to complete this pergola, the matching stools are sold separately, but work perfectly as bar seating. The pergola features a modern slat roof as well as privacy panels and a canopy for additional shade.

How to choose the best white paint

white paint interior design

Decorators White will act like white when partnered with cool wall colours, but against ‘white’ you’ll see that shadow in it. But even with this slightly cool vibe, the overall look is simple, clean and great for modern spaces. Creating appealing white interior design requires adding interesting objects into the mix.

How to Touch Up Paint on Walls Like a Pro

Be it black and white, colorful, large, small – absolutely anything goes. Give your white interiors lots of depth by painting them in Wevet. This contrasting off-white features a hint of grey and works well both on its own and with other hues. With its touch of beige, Honeymilk is a soft, warm egg-shell-white. It works wonders on walls and has a certain timeless quality to it.

The best interior design software for indoor/outdoor spaces

Like many matte hues, White 02 works well in minimalistic color schemes that shine with just the right dimensional finish. “The biggest challenge with white paint is when it leans gray or blue or yellow and skews the look you were going for,” explains Alessandra Wood, vice president of style at Modsy. That’s exactly why she’s so fond of Farrow & Ball’s All White, which is categorized as a pure white. Behr’s White Veil is a delicate, soft white that radiates a subtle, serene glow and captures the essence of tranquility.

Bedroom: White Dove by Benjamin Moore

Think of anything out of nature, such as plants, marble, stone, and wood. Elements originating from the great outdoors breathe life into any interior, whether monochrome or not. Plants are especially useful, as they gently break the white in interiors by adding a welcome earthy softness. In the primary bedroom of the ELLE DECOR Penthouse, he used both Strong White and Skimming Stone (below), which together achieved an effortlessly cohesive scheme. The light gray undertones of this cool white work well in modern architectural spaces, exuding a satisfying sense of spaciousness. Cream in my Coffee can be used as a versatile backdrop that pairs well with a wide range of colors and decor styles.

Mount Etna, Sherwin-Williams

Warm and creamy hues aren't quite right for every style, but there are some great alternatives, such as White Dove OC-17 by Benjamin Moore, which reads slightly more gray than warm. But a color in such high demand comes with a lot of shade variations – from warmer hues to different undertones, it can be tricky to find the best white paint color on the market. Whichever room color ideas you are considering, there is a shade of white to complement your color palette, it's simply a case of finding the right match. A cool white with soft gray undertones, Tidy White can create a crisp and clean white painted finish.

With neither blue nor yellow undertones, this true white can fit with almost any décor style. Choose a warmer white if you don't want your room to veer on the side of stark. "Some of my favorite whites include White Dove by Benjamin Moore, Farrow & Ball All White, and Farrow & Ball Ammonite, which has a subtle gray undertone," offers Vanessa Alexander of Alexander Design.

Home remodeling software or studio design software allows designers to experiment and view how these changes will look before any work starts. This can help avoid unexpected or costly surprises and ensure more satisfactory results in the final reveals of newly designed spaces or remodels. In a nutshell, Behr® Paint Colours software is fantastic for choosing paint colors quickly. To recap, Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap ® Visualizer for the Web offers pretty much everything you could want to help you choose the right paint colors for your room(s). I particularly like the expert picks option that’s perfect as a starting point.

Nuance is the name of the game when it come to white paint, and understanding your undertones is the way to win it. Cool hues, like whites with blue undertones, work well in rooms with plenty of natural light. New York based designer Grant Gibson suggests Super White by Benjamin Moore for a white with grey cool undertones that’ll look marvelous with marble. Not too creamy, not too stark, this is the Goldilocks of white paint colors. This crisp, clean color pairs well with warm and cool neutrals, offering a hint of gray that would please both a modern or classic aesthetic.

And what better way to do that than display personal mementos? These sentimental pieces help bring out the best in white spaces. Just because you want to make your home feel just like the trendiest white interiors, it doesn’t mean you should restrict each room to a single shade. Start layering your favorite shades of white, off-white, and cream. Mismatching white hues won’t look off-putting or disorganized.

Although these characteristics are great for anyone creating a space that feels vibrant and eclectic, if you're curating a space that feels simplistic and minimal, this might not be the right hue. 'While it’s a great versatile color for that reason, it’s also something to be aware of if that’s not what you’re going for,' adds Liz. It has a high LRV (light reflectance value), meaning that it will absorb the colors of what’s around it. Sophie has been an interior stylist and journalist for over 20 years and has worked for many of the main interior magazines during that time, both in-house and as a freelancer. On the side, as well as being the News Editor for indie magazine, 91, she trained to be a florist in 2019 and launched The Prettiest Posy where she curates beautiful flowers for modern weddings and events. For H&G, she writes features about interior design – and is known for having an eye for a beautiful room.

Although Matt’s flat cushions came in for criticism, it was flamboyant Ben, channelling old school Hollywood vibes, who failed to hit the high notes with his all-white boudoir. Michelle admitted she had never seen anything quite like it in her life, while Sophie said, 'it was like walking into a ghost’s dressing room'. This will greatly depend on the type of software you’re purchasing.

Queen Anne architecture is most common in homes, but can also be seen in schools, churches, and office buildings. French Country homes are designed with their environment in mind. Prairie-style homes were made famous by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright. These homes celebrate and complement the natural beauty of the Midwestern landscape with low and long shapes in the floor plan and building elements. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones. Nods to Pasadena’s famous peacocks can be found throughout the designs, and many creators fearlessly brought in statement floors, enveloped their spaces with jewel tones, and added texture to ceilings. Others focused on bringing the beauty of the estate’s gardens and views inside with verdant murals, floral fabrics, and nature-inspired lighting. The event draws more than 25,000 guests each year and offers several dining spaces, including Roe Japanese Fusion, the Tudor Rose Bistro, and Wattle & Daub Tavern. The Shops at the Showcase offer an array of merchants, from handmade jewelry to artisanal chocolates, and are also home to the Shops’s Wine & Cheese Bar.

Santicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette. Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting. See them in pictures and learn how the experts decorate each type.
